In many ways I prefer pastel over watercolor, but it does come with a few disadvantages. Pastel generally requires more space and setup. Plus, most aerosol fixative sprays alter the colors in varying degrees. While we lived in Egypt, this was compounded by the fact that aerosol spray cans are not allowed on airplanes. This meant making due with what was available on the local market.
I think what attracted me to this bedouin face was on how the cloth textures and patterns frame his grizzled appearance. I can visualize sitting down for a chat while trying to interpret his sa’idi Arabic.
